Nik, currently in his second year of the Ph.D. program at Stanford ESE, pursued mechanical engineering in both his undergraduate and master’s studies in Switzerland. Intrigued by the prospects of pursuing a Ph.D., he was initially hesitant about being far from home but found the exciting opportunities at Stanford too compelling to resist. His journey into energy science evolved from a mechanical engineering focus in his bachelor’s to a more fluid mechanics emphasis in his master’s. Nik’s current research at ESE involves pore-scale modeling of batteries. Through simulations serving as a computational microscope, he delves into the intricate details of battery interiors to understand the fundamental workings of batteries on a microscopic level. The goal of his research is to shed light on current limitations and degradation mechanisms to facilitate the design of new, sustainable batteries for electric vehicles and beyond

Being part of the ESE community, Nik highlights its liveliness, strong connections among members, and a close-knit atmosphere. The community’s support has been instrumental in overcoming research and course-related challenges, fostering an environment where individuals, despite diverse backgrounds, engage on a personal level. A collective group energy contributes to a sense of belonging and shared academic pursuits. Nik emphasizes the international and interdisciplinary nature of the ESE community, welcoming students from various research and cultural backgrounds. The program offers flexibility and freedom in research choices, making it ideal for those interested in understanding the fundamentals of energy science from the ground up. Nik encourages potential students to absorb knowledge and apply it to real-world problems, making the most of the program’s diverse opportunities.

Throughout his journey at ESE, Nik has found an environment that has not only nurtured his personal growth, but also ignited a passion for mentoring and guiding others. Contemplating a future that spans academia and industry, Nik envisions leveraging his expertise to contribute significantly to the realm of sustainable energy solutions, fostering a greener and more sustainable future.
